Analyzing sources, checking functions
Data warehouses integrate information from differently structured (often distributed) data stocks. The correct extraction, transformation and loading of the data (ETL) is therefore of central importance. Testing thus includes checking the program functions and processes as well as analyzing the data coming from different sources with regard to correct transformation. Prototyping, module and interface testing as well as End-2-End testing are particularly suitable test approaches for the challenges listed above.
In prototyping, the test creates its own image of the development implementation.
Module and interface testing are more of a classic testing approach. Functional test interfaces (ETL) are tested selectively and are highly specialized. Compared to prototyping, the lead times are short and the error detection rate is high. In contrast, test coverage is low, especially from a technical point of view.
In the End-2-End, the complete DWH system is accepted as a black box and evaluated on its output. This time-consuming procedure requires a high level of technical know-how and is of great importance in acceptance procedures.
