Reliable data migration as the key to successful system modernization
When replacing or modernizing existing systems, in addition to the “classic” application quality assurance, a data migration of data which has grown over many years often needs to be planned and carried out. This migration is of central importance because the integrity of the data must be maintained and the data must continue to be used in the new system.
The central task of migration support is to verify data integrity after the migration. Depending on the project requirements, different methods are used: for example, database comparison using queries in the old and new systems, verification based on samples, or the evaluation of relevant attributes and correlations within the datasets. Which method is applied in a specific project depends on the volume, structure, and complexity of the migration data.
Data migration projects require careful planning and execution due to the intervention in existing data sets. The necessary steps include, among other things:
Careful planning and execution of data migration, as well as checking migrated data sets for integrity and usability in the new system, are key success factors in migration projects.
Through our experience in projects of various sizes, we support our customers in the different phases and in selecting the appropriate approach and the corresponding quality assurance measures.
