Cineplexx: Automated Testing with Drvless

Drvless

The Cineplexx Group is an international cinema chain with locations in twelve countries – primarily in Southern and Southeastern Europe. An IT team in Vienna is responsible for the entire software landscape, including the website, POS application, and mobile apps.

Sabine Ringhofer, Cineplexx Group CIO: “We manage our entire software landscape from Vienna. This means we have a lot to test – and in many different languages.”

New releases with features and bug fixes appear approximately every two weeks, preceded by extensive regression testing. However, manual testing is time-consuming and prone to errors.

Objective

To reduce manual testing effort and ensure release stability, Cineplexx sought a test automation solution that could automatically test key use cases such as ticket purchase, reservation, and payment. Furthermore, the testing needed to be scalable across different countries, languages, and layouts. In 2023, Cineplexx decided to purchase Objentis Drvless Automation.

Introduction of Drvless

Isabel Weilguny, Responsible for IT applications: “We discovered Drvless at conferences and quickly realized that it perfectly suited our requirements. It works with graphical recognition and dynamically adapts to UI changes.”

Drvless enables the creation and execution of automated tests without programming knowledge. Reusable execution lists allow for sequential testing; tests can be repeated with different parameters, such as different ticket types or seating plans.

Onboarding and Support

The implementation was supported by the Objentis team. Together, they created the first test case, and the team received training as well as a user manual tailored to the customer’s requirements.

“The manual is very clearly structured and explains exactly how to create test cases. And if there were any questions, the Objentis team was always available,” said Weilguny. Updates also run smoothly, she added: “Before each release, we receive a short summary of the new features and a detailed document with all the bug fixes. The update is performed remotely – so far without any problems.”

Results

According to Cineplexx-IT, the use of Drvless brought measurable improvements:

  • Time savings: approximately 20 hours per week by eliminating manual testing.
  • Increased stability thanks to repeatable and reliable test runs.
  • Relieves the IT team, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
  • Easy update management that can be performed remotely without any problems.

“Drvless saves us an enormous amount of time and frees our team from routine tasks. The tests run stably and reliably,” Ringhofer emphasizes.

Outlook

Cineplexx plans to expand automated testing to other countries and increase mobile testing coverage. Furthermore, the company sees potential in using Drvless for testing and monitoring other business processes in the future.

“We are currently using Drvless mainly for testing, but the possibilities extend far beyond that,” says Weilguny.
